Hebrews 10:11 ESV And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. The reason Christians are not delivered from their daily sins is they don't know that they have the promise in the New Testament that they can be a distinct feature of the new covenant. I know there have been the holiness preachers and teachers who have taught instantaneous sanctification. From what I have seen by experience, this doesn’t work. Others have said that sanctification is a progressive process, and this seems more practical. However, with those who teach progressive sanctification there does not appear to be a clear statement that our salvation includes deliverance from sin or a workable program for overcoming the stronghold of sin. In other words once we are saved we seem to be trapped in some of the same junk and behavior as when we were lost. This ought not be the case. Before we can attempt to overcome our sinful nature we must know for a certainty that the Bible teaches that believers do not have to continue to walk in sin. Therefore let's state some facts from the New Testament. 1 John 1:9 ESV If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. From 1 John 1:9 we have a couple key truths. First, this verse is not to be used as a soul winning verse for the lost. The Holy Spirit is speaking through John here to Christians. So as Christians, we can confess our sins and be forgiven. However many stop there. The rest of the verse says that Jesus would cleanse us from all unrighteousness. That means to remove the sin. Traits of the NEW COVENANT: The new covenant does not permit continuing in sinful behavior. The new covenant includes deliverance from sinful behavior. The new covenant includes a workable plan for deliverance from sinful behavior. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. We do not gain full victory over stronghold sins until we learn that such victory is possible and is promise within in the Word of God. Then we have faith to pursue victory over the sins of the flesh until we obtain it. 1 John 3:4-5 ESV Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. (5) You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. Victory! Think about it. Victory over behaviors, such as lust, anger, lying, gossip, slander, selfishness, hatred, unforgiveness, spite, backbiting, sexual perversion, drunkenness, the use of drugs, and other demonic chains that destroy Christians. Does the new covenant include victory over these? You bet it does. Galatians 5:16 ESV But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

When we think about victory over sin the first thing we need to settle is "whose the boss?" Romans 6:14 ESV For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. Most of the time before we can receive a blessing from God we have to know the promise of the blessing in the Word. This is not always the way it works, but for the most part we need to know the promise of the Word before we can get the blessing of the Word. My people perish because of lack of knowledge. Remember that verse? Hosea 4:6 ESV My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. We don't know what we don't know. Once we know God has given the promise we can choose to believe and pray until we receive. The same is true of victory over sin. Once we see such victory is scriptural we can choose to believe and pray until we receive. You may have heard this or even said or thought this yourself: “No one ever told me before that you could get victory over sin. I always thought that we just had to live with it. I thought we just had to grin and bear it when it comes to sin habits." After this teaching you will know that you can have faith for victory over any sin that has had a hold on you. It really is so simple and practical.” In my early Christian life I had been taught that all of us are sinners and Christ came to forgive us and bring us to Heaven. As Christians we cannot keep the commandments in the New Testament because of our sinful nature. The Commandments in the New Testament were written to show us our need of a Savior. As long as we are in this world we have to sin. After all no one is perfect. After hearing this hopeless message for years I began to dig into the Word of God for myself on this topic just to see what it actually says about my nature and inability to stop from sinning. To my amazement it was plain that the New Testament didn't teach what I had been taught. There was a great deal in the Word of God about having a righteous behavior. Then when I was in Florida teaching in the Holy of Holies ministry and on the 7 feasts I saw something very unique about the Day of Atonement. There were two goats used on the Day of Atonement. The one goat was slain and its blood sprinkled in the Holy of Holies, typifying the blood atonement made by the Lord Jesus on the cross, for the forgiveness of my sin. However, the second goat which was also a goat of atonement was left alive and led away into the wilderness. This was a picture or typified the removal of my sin. Now the sixth chapter of the Book of Romans makes sense. We are no longer under the law therefore we are no longer a master to sin or a lost sin nature. TO BE CONTINUED... Hebrews 10:11 ESV And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
The reason Christians are not delivered from their stronghold of sins is they don't know that this is promise in the New Testament and is a distinct feature of the New Covenant. In our generational theology, there doesn't appear to be a clear statement that our salvation includes deliverance from daily sin or a workable program for overcoming the nature or habit of sin. Before we can attempt to overcome our sinful nature we must know for a certainty that the Bible teaches that believers do not have to be continually trapped in sin. We must know what the Word teaches. 1. The New Covenant does not permit continuing in sinful behavior. 2. The New Covenant includes deliverance from sinful behavior. 3. The New Covenant includes a workable plan for deliverance from all sinful behavior. We do not gain victory over the stronghold of sins until we learn that such victory is in available by faith in the Word of God and our Lord's work on the cross. Then we have faith to pursue victory over the sins of the flesh until we obtain it. We are not speaking of some sudden experience in which the habit of sin will be removed. The removal of the sin nature is included under the New Covenant, but it has to do with a whole life of cross-carrying obedience to the Lord as the sinful nature is slain and Christ is formed completely within us. Such freedom from the sin nature, being transformed into the moral image of Christ, and resting in the Person of the Father through Christ, are all part of the New Covenant. To much of modern Christianity is still be lived in the Old Covenant. We are not dealing with victory over behaviors, such as impure thoughts, lust, anger, lying, gossip, slander, selfishness, hatred, unforgiveness, spite, backbiting, sexual perversion, drunkenness, the use of drugs, and other demonic chains that destroy people including Christians. We do these things knowing that we can keep coming to the cross for forgiveness or we start excusing them away as normal human behavior. But the Scriptures tell us to come boldly before the throne of God for help. Does the New Covenant include victory over these and all sinful strongholds? You bet it does. Let’s see what the Bible says about victory over sin. It is entirely possible to get victory over this bunch of messy behaviors while we still are in this world. More later.... |
